Workshop on “Utilization of Intersectionality in Academic Research Pertaining to Children and Youth”

Summary of the Workshop

Intersectionality can be identified as a contemporary approach to sociological evaluation of various human dispositions and problems. It is a theoretical framework for understanding how aspects of a person’s social and political identities (e.g., gender, sex, race, class, sexuality, religion, disability, physical appearance, height, etc.) combine to create unique modes of discrimination and privilege. Age based intersectionality is key to outputting credible and time research pertaining to children and youth. This is because it allows for the evaluation of experiences unique to children (6 to 12 year age group) and youth (18 to 29 year age group) which are shaped by aged based levels of psychological development, human needs and maturity of thinking.

This approach to viewing the world is associated with qualitative academic research. Intersectionality is relevant for researchers and for practitioners because it enhances analytical sophistication and offers theoretical explanations of the ways in which heterogeneous members of specific groups. Based upon this understanding of Intersectionality, the workshop on “Utilization of Intersectionality in Academic Research Pertaining to Children and Youth”, will provide a comprehensive introduction on practically applying this approach in a research paper, journal article or policy note pertaining to children and youth.
